Family and Group Counselling

Family counselling usually involves several members of the family, sometimes at different times, and sometimes all together to try to resolve issues that involve the way the family functions. This may involve Mum and Dad coming to learn how to be more effective in their approach to parenting. It may involve Mum or Dad and a son or daughter coming for support with a school-related issue. It may involve the whole family coming to discuss how they deal with someone’s illness. Sometimes it’s hard to know whether family counselling is the right way to go until you’ve spoken to a counsellor, so it’s ok to contact us first by yourself.

Relationship Counselling within Families

If you and your partner are having difficulties resolving conflict over something, whether it’s how to manage children, the finances, or various life issues, this can impact on the whole family. This is where counselling can help. It is better to seek help early rather than leave it until it’s too late. A counsellor can help you and your partner to clarify what kind of relationship you want to have, what’s getting in the way, and how to deal with those issues so you can have the relationship you really want.

NDIS Support

YAFA may be able to help.  Under your NDIS plan’s ‘Therapeutic Supports’ the NDIS commonly uses words like “funds to access an allied health professional” – which includes a counsellor.  Depending on your plan, this is generally flexible so that you can access the services best for you to ‘improve daily living skills’.

Participants who self-manage or have a Plan Manager to manage their NDIS plan, can use NDIS registered providers and non-registered providers.

See below for our fees for YAFA NDIS counselling.  Our counsellors charge for the direct session time only, however, there is a cancellation fee – consistent with the NDIS pricing guide.

Contact YAFA to see if we are the right organisation to help you – email us or call 07 3886 277 and leave a message and we will get back to you.

Youth Counselling

If you’re between the ages of 11 and 18 and feel like you’re struggling but have no-one you can talk to, we can help. If you’re struggling with any of these things-

  • low self-esteem;
  • worrying all the time, feeling depressed;
  • hating the way you look, being bullied or hurt by someone;
  • not getting on with your friends or family, or if something is just bothering you and you don’t know what to do about it – then ask Mum, Dad or whoever looks after you to ring and make an appointment. However, if it’s easier, you can contact us by email.

Personal Counselling

Have you been trying to deal with an issue for a long time and it just hasn’t gone away? Or maybe something major has happened and you feel overwhelmed and you don’t know what to do? Our counsellors can help you to clarify your thinking or find new ways to look at a situation, work through difficult and painful feelings, or identify new strategies for managing difficult situations. Sometimes it just helps to talk to someone who’s not involved in what’s going on. Thinking about seeing a counsellor can be a bit scary. We do everything we can to make it comfortable and non-threatening.

Some of the issues we deal with include-

  • Separation and divorce;
  • Past and present abuse;
  • Anger issues;
  • Grief and loss;
  • Anxiety and depression;
  • Low self-esteem and identity issues;
  • Relationship conflict;
  • Parenting challenges;
  • Unexpected pregnancy.

Fees

We are a not-for-profit community organisation and are partially funded by the QLD State Government.

We have two different options you can choose from, and that will determine how long you may have to wait for an appointment.

Currently, for those who are in a position to pay for their sessions, there is no waitlist.  If you are able to pay out of your own pocket or have NDIS funding for counselling, we have sessions set aside. The cost is $150 per hour per session (excluding GST).

For those who aren’t in a position to contribute in this way, there is a wait time, as these are our government funded sessions, and are the most popular.  We do triage our services for these sessions, so we might just need to get some more information from you.

If you have been personally encouraged or blessed by YAFA or if you would just like to support this ministry, a tax-deductible donation of any size will go a long way in helping us serve families. Help us Help Others!
